Altimeter is a practical Android application designed to provide users with accurate measurements of true altitude above mean sea level (MSL) at their current location or any selected point on Earth. The app accesses device location data to retrieve raw altitude information via the GPS signal, functioning independently of network connectivity. It utilizes the EGM96 Earth Gravitational Model to determine precise altitude data.

Please note that network access is necessary only when retrieving the altitude of locations selected via the map.

The application defines height above mean sea level as the elevation relative to an average sea level datum, considering ground elevation or altitude in the air. Unlike GPS elevation, which models Earth as an ellipsoid with potential discrepancies up to 100 meters (328 feet) from the actual tidal height, this app employs a geoid-based vertical datum, such as the global EGM96 model, for greater accuracy.

The stated altitude vertical accuracy has a confidence level of 68%. This means there is a 68% probability that the true altitude falls within the estimated range defined by the reported value plus or minus its error margin.
